If the old Japanese Geisha culture be considered prostitution?

Many people here in the West who know limited culture has developed this impression after seeing or reading Memoirs of a Geisha. But is this an accurate assessment?

First, the idea that a geisha is a prostitute started because sailors and soldiers after invading Japan after World War II. The real geisha have nothing to do with them, and women who could not hack it as a real geisha because we saw an opportunity, the Americans had no idea! And these "Geisha" were themselves prostitutes. But this is not really well explained in the movie! Anywho, as actually paid for sex, previous posters, you will see that there is no definitive answer. I reading this was one of the few points that were completely out of this movie, but I read elsewhere that someone else has pointed out that even if they were prostitutes, it was not like your average street Walker! Only then will they really know and I do not think too many of they would blow the whistle on such a mystical way of life! Personally, I do not think they should, especially since I enjoyed watching the women Older dress for the holidays and would not consider them as something we Americans see as weak!
