Recently, reading the book The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien, I came across a song's poetic phrase which dwarfs I do not understand. It goes to the ancient king and elvish lord, there's more of a treasure of gold shining How is it possible that Article indefinite "a" after the word "many", which is used for plural nouns? There are no rules of grammar for this hair or am I just split too? Such responses would be appreciated! "A learning English
It is an idiom ... "A lot" followed by singular noun means the same thing as "many" followed by a plural noun. We still use the word in phrases such as "many time. But mostly you see it in poetry. When we use in discourse is used to express a feeling of nostalgia for those things ... as "many girls I've known."
