Reception table centerpieces?

I'm trying to figure out a fairly cheap centerpiece for our wedding. Even though other wedding costs are MUCH higher than centerpieces I don't want to spend too much for something like that. Were doing rectangle tables and were going to have about 6 tables. Were having a french wedding and our colors are dark purple, light pink, ivory, and black. So far we've thought of getting antique ivory vases, and making silk flower pomanders to sit on the top with scattered rose petals kindof like this but with a lightly different vase and no ribbon. http://bios.weddingbee.com/pics/85178/DSC01897.JPG and candles down the table but were unsure. Any ideas?? :]

that would look nice without the blue ribbon and in better looking vases.

unless you can find a great deal on the silk roses, it would be cheaper to buy real flowers from a wholesaler. here is a place you can check out. http://www.fiftyflowers.com

in order to achieve the pomander look, it would take about 30 to 50 flower heads per bouquet if you use roses. for 6 rectangular tables ( am assuming they are 6 foot long) you would need to have at least 3 bouquets per table, which would be a total of 18 bouquets with 30 flowers each, that would end up being about 540 flowers. even if you could find some really cheap silk flowers, that is still a huge expense.

you would be much better off using hydranges or even carnations. hydrangeas are cheaper and because they have such full heads, you could make a compact mound of only three flower heads per vase in order to make it look nice and full, five at the most. carnations are cheaper and also nice and full so you could get by with probably 250 or 300 of those.

hydrangeas or carnations both have a nice lacey look which will lend themselves to a french look at your wedding and they come in great colors.
